NHS or Private Eye Test – Which One Is Right for You?

At Rawlings Opticians, we provide both NHS-funded and Private eye examinations. The right option depends on whether you qualify for free NHS sight tests or need to book privately.

You may be entitled to a free NHS sight test if you:

  • Are under 16, or under 19 and in full-time education

  • Are aged 60 or over

  • Are registered blind or partially sighted

  • Have diabetes or glaucoma

  • Are 40 or over and a close relative (parent, sibling, or child) of someone with glaucoma

  • Have been advised by an eye doctor (ophthalmologist) that you’re at risk of glaucoma

  • Receive certain benefits, such as Income Support, Universal Credit, or Pension Credit Guarantee Credit

  • Hold an NHS HC2 certificate for full help with health costs

If you’re unsure, our team can check your eligibility when you book or when you visit your local Rawlings branch.

Private Eye Test

If you don’t qualify for an NHS-funded sight test, you can still enjoy the same high-quality care with a Private Eye Examination.
This option includes:

  • A comprehensive eye health check using advanced technology

  • Personalised advice on your vision and eyewear

  • The flexibility to book at a time that suits you

Private appointments are available for a set fee, and many patients choose them for the convenience, extra time, and access to enhanced testing options.
