Expert Advice from Rawlings Opticians & Hearing Care
Wondering how often you should have your eyes tested? For most adults, an eye test is recommended every two years—but the right frequency depends on your age, eye health, family history and lifestyle. For most adults, an eye test is recommended every two years, even if your vision seems perfectly fine. However, the right frequency depends on your age, eye health, family history and lifestyle. At Rawlings Opticians & Hearing Care, we believe regular checkups are one of the most important things you can do for your long-term eye health.
Why Regular Eye Tests Matter
It is about far more than simply checking whether you need glasses. Modern eye tests can help detect early signs of eye conditions including glaucoma, cataracts and macular degeneration, often before symptoms become noticeable. Your optometrist may also spot signs of wider health conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure and raised cholesterol during a routine eye test. Because many eye diseases develop slowly and painlessly, regular check-ups are essential for protecting your sight.
How Often Should I come to the Opticians?
For most adults in England, eye exams are generally recommended every two years. However, some people may need more frequent appointments, including:
- Children and teenagers having rapid prescription changes
- Contact lens wearers
- People with diabetes (who are not on an NHS screening programme) or certain other medical conditions
- Those with a family history of glaucoma and have additional risk factors
- Anyone experiencing changes in vision, new headaches or eye discomfort
Your optometrist will advise you on the most appropriate recall interval based on your individual needs. Additionally you may feel you want to have your eyes checked more frequently if for example you are a driver over 70, or if you have early cataracts or other progressive conditions or if you have to take medications with ocular side effects.
NHS Rules and Restrictions
Some people qualify for NHS eye tests (the NHS use ‘test’ rather than exam or examination) and under NHS regulations in England, NHS-funded eye tests are usually available every two years unless you meet very specific eligibility criteria. You can check whether you qualify for NHS eye care here: https://www.nhs.uk/nhs-services/opticians/free-nhs-eye-tests-and-optical-vouchers/
More frequent NHS tests than 2 yearly is only allowed where clinically necessary, for example this includes very young children and some people with a family history of glaucoma- your optometrist will be able to tell you whether you can have another NHS eye test sooner than 2 years. NHS eye test regulations are strict, and practices and clinicians must be able to clinically justify any NHS-funded eye test carried out earlier than standard recall intervals.
Private Eye Examinations
If you are not entitled to NHS eye test, or you wish to have more frequent checkups than the NHS will allow, private eye exams outside of the NHS can be booked at any time as there is no restriction. Some people choose to do this for peace of mind, or because they want an eye condition monitored more regularly than the NHS will pay for. Private eye exams can be paid for on an ad-hoc basis, but many people prefer to join a plan and set up a small monthly payment for easy access to regular appointments. Private eye exams can include more detailed tests than the NHS will fund (such as OCT or photography) and may be a longer appointment to allow for this. At Rawlings our appointments are 30-45 minutes to allow time for additional tests and discussion/advice.

FAQs
How often should I have an eye test?
Most adults should have an eye test every two years, even if they have no problems with their vision. However, some people, including children, contact lens wearers, and those with certain medical conditions or a family history of eye disease, may need more frequent examinations. Your optometrist will recommend the most appropriate recall interval for your individual needs.
Why do I need an eye test if my vision seems fine?
Eye tests do much more than check whether you need glasses. They can detect early signs of eye conditions such as glaucoma, cataracts and age-related macular degeneration before symptoms develop. They may also reveal signs of wider health conditions, including diabetes and high blood pressure.
Can I have an eye test more often than every two years?
Yes. If your optometrist recommends more frequent monitoring because of your eye health or medical history, you may need appointments sooner. If you don’t qualify for an earlier NHS-funded eye test, you can choose to book a private eye examination whenever you wish.
Who is eligible for free NHS eye tests?
Some people qualify for NHS-funded eye tests, including children, people aged 60 and over, those receiving certain benefits, and individuals with specific medical conditions. Eligibility is set by the NHS, and your optometrist can advise whether you qualify or you can check the latest guidance on the NHS website.
