Exceptional Eye Care and Hearing Care in Caterham

We’ve proudly delivered eye care to our local community from the same location in Caterham for nearly 80 years. Always building a strong reputation for exceptional care and personalised service.

Our experienced Optometrists offer thorough eye examinations using the latest diagnostic technology, including OCT (Optical Coherence Tomography). This advanced scan captures high-resolution images of the retina, helping detect conditions like glaucoma, macular degeneration, and other retinal diseases at their earliest stages.

Try Contact Lenses in Caterham

We fit all types of contact lenses. From daily and monthly disposables to multifocals and gas-permeable lenses. Astigmatism is no problem with contact lenses available for even extreme prescriptions. People who simply need reading glasses can also try contact lenses as an alternative. Multifocal lens technology allows for the correction of both reading and long-distance vision at once, making them particularly useful for wearers of varifocal glasses who want to try contact lenses.

Advice on eye health

We also provide expert advice and treatment for minor eye conditions, including dry eye syndrome and blepharitis, with a wide range of products in stock – including specialist drops, wipes, and hot compress solutions.

Find Your Perfect Frames

Our knowledgeable dispensing opticians will help you choose from a wide selection of modern designer frames including Gotti for Swiss elegance and Lindberg for minimalist luxury. In addition we carry ranges from Vanni, Nike, Dutz, Longchamp, Gucci, Chloe, Bellinger, Flexon & Stepper and we also are proud to be Moscot stockists – we carry bold, statement pieces where heritage meets contemporary style. We also offer a great range of children’s glasses in fun colours and styles.

We’re passionate about sunglasses too – including prescription options from Maui Jim which herald from sunny Hawaii and sports protective sunglasses from Bolle whose lens quality for performance is globally renowned.

Alongside our eye care services, we also provide professional hearing care to help you stay connected to the people and sounds that matter most. Our qualified audiologists offer comprehensive hearing assessments, ear wax removal, hearing aid consultations, fittings and ongoing aftercare. Whether you’re concerned about changes in your hearing or looking for the latest discreet hearing technology, we’re here to provide expert advice and personalised solutions in a relaxed, professional environment.

What our Caterham customers say about us

  • This was my first annual review of my hearing aid with Miss Tovey. What I appreciated was that I felt under no time pressure and we were able to talk broadly about my hearing experience. I found her very encouraging.

  • Had a great first visit to Rawlings in Caterham. The optician was super helpful and accommodated my anxiety with the pre-test screening (i hate things touching my eye, so the pressure tests are a nightmare for me) amd was very understanding with my predicament. The rest of the test went off without a hutch and then the prescribing optician outside was very helpful with my glasses selection. All in all, great customer service.

I was extremely pleased with the services I received from Rawlings at Caterham. The Optician was very thorough and took the time to carefully explain the results of the eye scans and conduct the optical tests. The Audiologist was very considerate in carrying out a wax removal treatment and made me feel very comfortable. Highly Recommended Arcangela Edwards

I was greeted immediately on entering the premises and was impressed by the friendly and professional approach of the lady who conducted preliminary work, including eye photos, before my appointment in which I saw Simon who normally works at the Purley office. The appointment could not have been better: Simon explained each step of the process and was happy to provide clarification when I had a query. He explained the various graphs and photos and provided a very professional assessment of each eye. I was very pleased with the whole experience and will ensure that I return to Rawlings for my next check-up, or if I need advice prior to that.

  • I have been using Rawlings for eyesight check-ups and purchasing spectacles for around 60 years starting in their Purley branch and subsequently at Caterham where I now reside. I have always found them polite, friendly and efficient. About 3 years ago I called into their Caterham Branch because I was losing vision in one eye rapidly. They quickly established that it was a detached retina and made an appointment at the East Surrey Hospital A & E department for that same day. Due to their prompt intervention my eyesight has been restored and I am most grateful.

Excellent service as ever, knowledgeable and helpful staff and lots of good advice. This was a follow up earwax removal appointment following the first appointment in August and after each one I could hear so much better. My hearing was intermittent and now works perfectly so thanks again to all concerned.

I’m one of those lucky people who loves what they do for a living. I’ve been in optics for roughly 20 years and have worked with several companies over the years, but with Rawlings it feels like home. My favourite part of my job is working with children who are wearing spectacles for the first time. It can have such a life changing effect on the child.

My free time is usually spent with my family, and I try to stay fit. I love anything to do with art and I’m trying to find the time to reignite my passion for reading.

Being an optometrist must be in my blood as four other members of my family have worked in the industry. My mum worked at Rawlings Opticians and I had my first eye test at downstairs in Rawlings Croydon branch when I was 11. As a young child I always loved playing with the buttons in the consulting room when I was off from school. I guess I still like playing with the buttons now but there are now just a lot more!

After graduating from Aston University I worked for a few years in Kent but eventually I returned to my optometric starting point and have been at Rawlings ever since. I have always been interested in contact lenses and have done several trials on new products for manufacturers. I am an active member of our local optometric committee in Croydon which has been instrumental in setting up local shared care service which allows me to treat and help patients referred from local GPs. Due to this I decided to take the plunge and go back to studying to become one of the few optometry independent prescribers in the country which allows me to treat manage and treat many more conditions than I dreamed possible when I started.

Outside of work I try to play golf when time allows and probably spend far too much time following the trials and tribulations of Crystal Palace FC.

My optics journey started with work experience for an independent Opticians in St Albans when I was 15 years old. I loved the interactions the optometrist had with patients on a personal and professional level, and I knew this was the career path I wanted to pursue.

Since qualifying I have enjoyed a variety of roles within optics including management, trainee development and supervision at City University. These were very challenging and fulfilling roles and have allowed me to continue developing my skill set and other colleagues in the field.

I jumped at the chance to join Rawlings Opticians because of their strong reputation for professional expertise and service. I really enjoy working for Rawlings as I have access to the latest technology and this enables me to give my patients the time and very best care. I’m proud to be part of such a caring and experienced team. I am currently undergoing various training opportunities to further my clinical development in Myopia management through contact lenses and spectacles and dry eye management. I absolutely love my job and feel so lucky to still love it after almost 20 years!

Outside of work, my home life keeps me busy with trying to keep two young boys entertained! I drag them outdoors as much as possible whether it’s walking, hiking and not to forget gardening (much to their displeasure!)

My career has taken a few different paths, but each one has helped shape the clinician I am today.

I originally trained as a musician and recording engineer, completing my first degree in Sound Engineering for Film and Television. I then spent six years working with some of the UK’s major broadcasters, including Sky and the BBC. After moving to Sydney, Australia, with my wife, I taught music to children across New South Wales before returning to the UK to pursue a career in healthcare.

After completing my second degree, graduating with a distinction in Audiology from De Montfort University, I began working in private practice, helping patients with a wide range of hearing and balance needs. Since then, I have continued to develop my clinical skills, with additional training in tinnitus management, speech and language therapy, and Aston University-accredited microsuction wax removal.

I have been helping patients with their hearing care since 2016 and remain passionate about continuing my professional development so I can provide the highest standard of care. I believe in being honest and transparent, helping patients understand their options and supporting them to make informed decisions about their hearing health. I also enjoy using the wide range of advanced diagnostic equipment available at Rawlings to ensure every patient receives the most appropriate assessment and care.

Outside work, I enjoy travelling, hiking, discovering new whiskies, learning foreign languages and exploring a wide range of music and films.
