Having been to several high street big name opticians and always feeling a little dissatisfied with the outcome I can honestly say Rawlings has been great! The professional, knowledgeable staff willing to spend time explaining prescriptions and the various options and trade off’s filled me with confidence. I strongly believe I have the best solution for my vision now! Would highly recommend!

Took my 91 year old mother. The patience and care of the optician was great. We discussed the best approach to next steps and I felt that the needs of my mother, at her age, were taken into account and there was no push to buy new glasses - despite a very small change. A really good service.

At 18, I began a Chiropractic degree, but when the university discontinued the course, I had to rethink my future. I worked full-time as an Optical Assistant while studying Human Biology through distance learning, and it was during that time that I discovered my love for optics.

Although I enjoyed working in optics, my career took a different direction for a while. I joined a bank, where I worked my way up to managing a portfolio of high-net-worth clients. While I enjoyed the role and gained valuable experience in business, leadership and customer care, I always knew my passion lay elsewhere.

After completing a PR & Marketing course while working in interior design, I realised that optics was where my real enthusiasm lay. I had always loved the combination of helping people while applying science and technical skills, and I knew the business and management experience I had gained along the way would also prove invaluable. I then took a 10-year career break to raise my family before returning to practice. During this time, I completed the Dispensing Optician course. It was challenging, but I threw myself into it and loved every moment, confirming that I had found the career I was always meant to do.

For the past nine years, I’ve combined my Dispensing Optician qualification with a management role, which has been both fulfilling and rewarding. What I enjoy most about working in independent practice is having the time to give every patient the experience they deserve, while also having the freedom to shape the practice, from the products we offer to the brands we work with.

Clinically, I have a particular interest in working with older patients, supporting people with low vision and helping children through myopia management. I also enjoy complex dispensing, working closely with lens manufacturers to find the best possible solution for every patient. Continued learning and professional development are important to me, and I enjoy constantly expanding my knowledge.

Outside work, you’ll usually find me at the gym, hiking, travelling, enjoying good food or reading books on personal growth and wellbeing. I genuinely look forward to work every day and feel fortunate to be part of such a rewarding profession.

And yes, I still occasionally wonder what life would have been like if I’d stayed with chiropractic… but then I remember—I’d much rather adjust spectacles than spines.

Optometrists / Contact Lens Opticians / Audiologists

Maria Dovey

Maria Dovey

BSc Hons MCOptom, Higher Cert. Glauc.

I arrived in the UK from Denmark to study Optometry in 1999, then qualified from City University in London with a 1st class Honours degree in Optometry in 2003.

Since qualifying, I have always enjoyed a varied working week and Optometry has taken me into different avenues from teaching at City University / The Institute of Optometry to hospital work, where I have been working in the Glaucoma clinic at Cobham Hospital since 2015. Combined with this, I have always favoured working in Independent Practice as you can offer that special touch and have been in a couple of different practices across Surrey.

I joined Rawlings in December 2020 in the middle of the Pandemic with all the challenges that entails and am settling in nicely. Bookham is a beautiful village, and the staff and patients are wonderful and welcoming. I enjoy seeing a great range of patients from children to the elderly and always make my best effort in getting to a visual solution that is perfect whether it means new spectacles, contact lenses, monitoring eye disease or referring for eye surgery. Having attended various courses and lectures over the years, I feel well equipped to do exactly that.

My spare time is spent with my family: Husband, two boys and two girl cats! I enjoy keeping fit doing running, spinning, walking, and going to the gym and I have been known to attempt various DIY and baking projects too; the latter usually appreciated by my colleagues! Prior to having children, I have been travelling with my husband all over the world and hope that one day this will again be possible…

BSc MCOptom

I qualified with BSC honours degree in Optometry in 1998. Since then, I have worked in larger multiple Opticians. My latter post was with a large multiple, working part time in a very busy practice. I then decided to take on role as Optometrist Store Manager on a full-time basis which I thoroughly enjoyed. I am proud that I trained and developed a workforce to share and exemplify my passion of delivering exemplary customer service.

I was approached about a role at Rawlings Opticians, a few miles from where I live. This suited family life much better because, I was travelling further afield in my previous role. I joined Rawlings in August 2022 and I really love working here. We have an amazing team who care about our customers, and I really like being able to offer a more personalized service and spend the time with every customer to make sure their needs are met. Having access to the most up to date products and equipment means I know I am giving every customer a high level of eye care.

Outside of work I like to spend time with my family and friends. I live with my husband and our eight-year-old son. A lot of my time is taken up watching my son play rugby, swimming and golf.

We enjoy days out together, holidays, walking and trips to the seaside.

My career has taken a few different paths, but each one has helped shape the clinician I am today.

I originally trained as a musician and recording engineer, completing my first degree in Sound Engineering for Film and Television. I then spent six years working with some of the UK’s major broadcasters, including Sky and the BBC. After moving to Sydney, Australia, with my wife, I taught music to children across New South Wales before returning to the UK to pursue a career in healthcare.

After completing my second degree, graduating with a distinction in Audiology from De Montfort University, I began working in private practice, helping patients with a wide range of hearing and balance needs. Since then, I have continued to develop my clinical skills, with additional training in tinnitus management, speech and language therapy, and Aston University-accredited microsuction wax removal.

I have been helping patients with their hearing care since 2016 and remain passionate about continuing my professional development so I can provide the highest standard of care. I believe in being honest and transparent, helping patients understand their options and supporting them to make informed decisions about their hearing health. I also enjoy using the wide range of advanced diagnostic equipment available at Rawlings to ensure every patient receives the most appropriate assessment and care.

Outside work, I enjoy travelling, hiking, discovering new whiskies, learning foreign languages and exploring a wide range of music and films.
