And Supporting a Local Fundraiser Making a Difference
Nystagmus is a lifelong eye condition that causes involuntary, repetitive eye movements, often described as “wobbling” or “flickering.”
These movements can affect vision, focus and depth perception, making everyday tasks such as reading, recognising faces or maintaining eye contact more challenging. For some people, finding a comfortable head position can help improve clarity, while others may experience sensitivity to light or balance difficulties.
There are different types of nystagmus. Congenital nystagmus appears in early infancy, while acquired nystagmus develops later in life. Although there is currently no cure, there are ways to improve visual function and comfort. Glasses or contact lenses can help maximise vision, and in certain cases, specialist eye muscle surgery may improve head posture or visual stability. Ongoing clinical research continues to explore new treatments and a deeper understanding of the condition.
Despite affecting thousands of people in the UK, nystagmus remains under-recognised. That is why the work of the Nystagmus Network is so important. This national charity provides essential information, family support, advocacy and funds research aimed at improving diagnosis, treatment and quality of life for those living with the condition. They also work to raise awareness among schools, employers and healthcare professionals to ensure better understanding and support.
Rawlings Opticians & Hearing Care is proud to be sponsoring Hannah Pattison’s fundraising walk in aid of the Nystagmus Network. Hannah’s challenge is not only a remarkable personal commitment but also a powerful way to raise awareness and vital funds that will help the charity continue its work supporting families and driving research forward.
Hannah shares:
“Our journey will include multiple long-distance walks, including climbing Snowdon, and many dedicated miles in between.
This cause is incredibly close
This challenge is my way of giving back. Every mile walked represents gratitude, awareness, and a commitment to supporting others living with nystagmus.”
Having recently had specialist surgery with consultant Helena Lee, Hannah has found the results life-changing, which has inspired her to give back to the charity that supported her throughout her journey.
As an independent opticians established in 1895, Rawlings has long believed in supporting both clinical excellence and the communities we serve. Backing Hannah’s walk reflects that commitment.

Together, we can help increase understanding, support research and improve the lives of those living with nystagmus — one step at a time. We will follow more of her journey later this year and across our social media channels, so keep an eye out for updates.
