Celebrating 130 Years

If you passed one of our practices on Saturday 13th September, you may have noticed that we closed a little earlier than usual. Our teams from across Surrey and Hampshire were gathering in Guildford for a long-awaited celebration: marking 130 years of Rawlings Opticians & Hearing Care.

It was a truly special event

Filled with laughter, stories, and faces old and new. For many of our staff, it was the first time meeting colleagues from other branches across the counties, and for all of us, it was a chance to finally enjoy the celebration we had hoped to hold for our 125th anniversary in 2020 before Covid got in the way. With our Managing Director Richard Rawling and Chair Claire Shipway addressing the room with flair and humour, after dinner the dancefloor was filled until late into the evening with music chosen by the teams.

From Six Shillings to Surrey and Hampshire

Our story began on 18th September 1895, when Alfred John Rawling opened a small shop in Croydon. His first day’s takings were just six shillings – around 30p today. From that modest start, we have grown into one of the UK’s longest-established independent opticians.

Originally a jeweller and watchmaker, Alfred soon discovered his true passion: vision. While running the shop, he studied optics and, in 1904, became one of the very first in the country to qualify as an optician by examination. His diploma still hangs proudly in our Croydon practice – a reminder of the pioneering spirit that still guides us.

A Family Tradition of Care

For more than a century, the Rawling family has steered the business through world wars, the launch of the NHS, andnumber 130 ever-evolving optical technology. Four generations – including our current Managing Director, Richard Rawling – have carried Alfred’s vision forward, always with the same focus: expert eye tests, contact lens fitting, and carefully chosen eyewear.

From advertising on Croydon trams to projecting an eye onto the road from a lantern above in Winchester (which startled more than a few horses!), Rawlings has always embraced innovation with a touch of character.

Expanding Into Hearing Care

More recently, we added Hearing Care to our services – a natural extension of our dedication to life’s most precious senses. With professional hearing tests, personalised solutions, and ongoing audiology care, our patients can now look after their vision and hearing under one trusted roof.

Twelve Practices, One Vision

Today, Rawlings has twelve practices across Surrey and Hampshire, including our newest in Banstead. Whether you visit us in Croydon, Winchester, or anywhere in between, you’ll find the same Rawlings approach: boutique personal service, clinical expertise, and a family-led ethos that has endured since 1895.

A Living Legacy

From six shillings on opening day to a thriving group in 2025, our journey is one of family, innovation, and dedication. We’re proud of our heritage, and while much has changed over 130 years, one thing remains the same: at Rawlings Opticians & Hearing Care, your eyes and ears are our world.
