Getting ready for the new school year?

New shoes, new uniform…..new glasses? Don’t forget to book your children in to have their eyes tested before they go back to school in September. It’s really important that children have clear and comfortable vision in order to reach their academic potential and around 1 in every 8 children have an eye problem which may be undiagnosed if they don’t have regular eye tests, which are FREE for schoolchildren under the age of 19.

Contact lenses are a great option for children from around the age of 6, and soft daily disposable lenses are a safe and comfortable option for children either on an everyday basis or just for sports if preferred. They are available in most prescriptions nowadays and there are alternative options for more complex prescriptions.

Short-sighted children can benefit from myopia management treatment, which aims to slow down how quickly their eyes are changing, and in many cases can stop the deterioration. This is achieved with specialist contact lenses designed specifically for children, and there are glasses with the same effect available too. This is desirable to keep career options open, as some careers are ruled out with even moderate levels of short sight – but there are health benefits too as short-sighted adults are more prone to develop some eye diseases.

Children’s eye testing is usually recommended from the age of around 3 ½, but we can examine them at a younger age if you suspect a problem. They don’t need to know any letters, as we have plenty of tricks up our sleeves to measure their vision and make it a fun experience! It’s not all about eyesight either, an eye examination is an important health check too.
