Short-sighted Children? Don’t limit their future -Think MiYOSMART!

Our Optometrists at Rawlings Opticians have been passionate about caring for short-sighted (myopic) children for many years, using contact lens treatments such as Misight soft contact lenses or overnight orthokeratology. These special contact lenses slow down the rate of progression of myopia. But until now, there was no option outside of contact lenses. We are thrilled to announce that now a revolutionary new glasses treatment is available at Rawlings : MiYOSMART lenses from HOYA, which use new D.I.M.S technology to help manage the development of myopia. They are clinically proven to be an effective solution to slow down the progression of myopia and are as easy to wear as any pair of children’s glasses.

Managing children’s myopia is an important part of our clinical offering –with every increase in short-sight there is an increase in the risk of eye disease in later life, including retinal detachment, glaucoma, macular disease and cataract. This is a global ticking time bomb – as short sight is increasing worldwide due to a mix of environmental and hereditary factors, the incidence of these conditions is also set to rise as these short-sighted children become adults.

Additionally, career choices are more limited for short-sighted folk – many occupations require good uncorrected vision not just good vision with glasses or contact lenses, particularly in the armed forces.

More about D.I.M.S. Technology – a breakthrough in Myopia Management

MiYOSMART glasses lenses are a single vision lens that will enable clear vision in the same way as a conventional lens. However, MiYOSMART lenses use a cutting-edge design called D.I.M.S, which means that on the lens surface there is a “treatment zone” that consists of hundreds of miniscule ‘lenslets’ on the lens surface, these areas provide an additional treatment correction. It is this additional correction that aims to impact the progression of the level of short-sightedness. Based on a two-year clinical trial results, MiYOSMART is proven to curb myopia progression in children on average by 60%*.

So, whilst their glasses are being worn, your child will see clearly but also the growth of their eyes (and therefore the level of their short-sightedness) is being managed by the D.I.M.S technology. The Other benefits of MiyoSmart lenses include:

  • Impact-resistant material safe for active kids
  • UV protection
  • Light and thin
  • Anti-glare coating

Taking care of your child’s eyesight. Ideally children should:

  1. Spend more time outdoors, minimum 2 hours a day
  2. Take breaks from long intensive screen time or near-work
  3. Take note of their environment, such as using proper lighting and posture
  4. Have regular eye examinations to ensure that myopia or other vision problems are detected and treated early, reducing the worsening of vision, myopia progression and potential complications of high myopia
